In Germany the federal states have regulated the authorisation of translators and interpreters individually. As a citizen of Dusseldorf, Heike Schwarz is subject to the regulations in Northrhine-Westphalia.

After taking the state exam for bilingual correspondents in Munich, she took the state exam for translators in Darmstadt, akin to an undergraduate degree.

Her most recent academic endeavour was to complete her postgraduate course at City University in London, the last of its kind, as the course has been discontinued from 2014 on.

She now holds the M. A. degree in legal translation which she achieved with merit, thus belonging to an elite group of around only one hundred translators worldwide holding this qualification.
